Our lives are marked by times and seasons.
This morning my wife and I changed the sheets on our bed from the cotton blend sheets of summer to the fleecy sheets of winter. Every night when I slip into bed I will be reminded that it’s a different season.
Other season markers we grow up with are summer and winter uniforms at school and different sports played at different times of the year- although that seems to have changed as both rugby league and cricket seem to go on forever these days.
Our lives go through longer seasons as well. Being a child is very different to being a teenager, which is different again from being an adult. Buying your first home and having your first child also mark new seasons with new joys and responsibilities. Middle age and old age are also separate seasons of our lives.
It is said that every cell in our body gets turned over every 7 years or so. Our bodies aren’t even made of the same components through our lives.
Some people welcome change as a positive thing. Life is always a new adventure, and you can mix it up with different hobbies and jobs. Other people like things to stay the same. All of us need a mixture of some stability and some new challenges.
There are some things in life that stay constant. If the mountains shake, or the sky changes from blue to brown, or the sun rises in the west, we know there is a huge problem.
Even more unchanging than these constants is the creator of all things, God himself. The Bible tells us that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8). This is good news because we can rely on the Lord not to change his mind, or to change his personality. He isn’t happy one day and depressed the next.
In a world that changes constantly, you can trust that God will never change.
